Award winners have been announced for the 24th annual Walter Brooks Memorial Watercolor Exhibition at the Rowayton Arts Center, 145 Rowayton Avenue, through Sunday, June 26. They are first place – Dick Rauh of Westport; second place – Susan Spivak of Westport; third place – Ellen Gordon of Stamford; honorable mention – Ann Kromer of Ridgefield. The RAC gallery is open from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free. All 48 works in this exhibit are by Rowayton Arts Center members. In addition to the award winners, participating artists include: Bridgeport -- Kaz Oda; Darien – Vicki French Smith, Lisa Thoren and Diane Weeks; Fairfield – Janine Brown; New Canaan -- Marianne Rothballer and Antoinette Vardamis; Norwalk – Pat Atkins, Kathy Draper, Merion Frolich, Jessica Huse, Scott Kuykendall, Stan Pastore, Barbara Seith and Bela Szabo; Ridgefield – Melissa Orme and Richard Koleszar; Rowayton – Hanneke Goedkoop, Dana Laird, Lynn Stephens Massey and Lilly Langotsky; Weston – Barbara Bernstein; Westport – Sandra Aldrich, JoAnn Davidson, Pam Davis, Judith Orseck Katz, Wendy MacCordy and Mary Maynard; Wilton – Clark Robinson, Betty Schneier and Jen Shelley. Faxon says, “I particularly loved the diversity of approaches to watercolor exhibited here from botanical to abstraction. It was very difficult to narrow the field to just four. Dick Rauh’s technique is superb but what stands out more is the design, the space division, values in an almost monochromatic color scheme – very dramatic. Each of the two figures by Sue Spivak and Ellen Gordon, juxtaposed against each other, is exciting in its own way -- one delicate, lovely, opaque vs. transparency; the other angular, fractured, full of color, shapes and contrasts. The striking simplicity and immediacy of “On the Road Again” by Ann Kromer creates a constant motion. One is there in the middle of the painting – on the road again.

Rita Squier: Tuesday's Tips and Techniques for Watercolor Painting

Start by keeping it simple and work from a photograph. Choose a photograph where the person's eyes are closed or looking down or maybe they're looking away. A profile. Eyes are tough. Choose your subject matter wisely. If you think you can't paint a portrait you can if you choose a simpler subject. A toddler, a baby, a bald headed person. Don't laugh. Eyes can be tough and so can hair. So don't let that stop you from trying to paint a portrait.
