2 day-care workers charged after 3-year-old boy found alone

Two child-care workers are facing misdemeanor counts of child neglect after a 3-year-old boy was left behind and alone in an eastern Henrico park.
Niesha Cannon, 33, of the 3300 block of Millers Glen Lane, and Keona Camper, 19, of the 3700 block of Howard Road, both in Henrico County, were arrested Thursday evening after the child was picked up by his grandmother.
Cannon and Camper are believed to be employees of Korinne N Friends Family Child Care, located in the 4500 block of Williamsburg Road. Both women appeared at the police station in the effort to help locate the child’s family.
The 3-year-old was unharmed and spent more than an hour at a police station munching on treats and watching cartoons, according to officers at the eastern Henrico police station.
The child’s grandmother, located with the help of the day-care facility, picked her grandson up about 3:30 p.m. but declined comment to media.
4:17 p.m.
Henrico police Lt. Eric D. Owens says the child is on his way home with his grandmother.
Owens said the boy was part of a Korinne N Friends Family Child Care trip to the playground at Robinson Park. Two adult supervisors were responsible for 15 children. Police said that the group left while the boy was in the park bathroom, and it appears that no head count was taken before they left they park to return to the child care center at 4501-L Williamsburg Road.
A man who answered the door at Korinne N Friends refused to comment. Authorities said an investigation is continuing.
3:50 p.m.
Police say the child has been claimed and that they are dealing with a family member and day-care worker about the incident.
3:32 p.m.
Henrico police are caring for a 3-year-old boy found wandering alone around Robinson Park at 214 Westover Ave. near Nine Mile Road. Police are urging anyone with knowledge of the child, who wears black-frame glasses and was wearing a gray T-shirt and blue shorts, to contact police.
Police said the child, who was found about 12:50 p.m., was not very verbal, so officers were not able to immediately get any information regarding his name or home.
The child is being cared for at the eastern Henrico police station at 561 East Park Court in Sandston.
