I have started Bozley on clicker training and he seems to be doing fine. I am wondering from other experienced boxer owners whether or not anyone has used this method with success? I would also love to hear about anyone who has tried it and found that it did not work well for their dog. I know every pup is different, however I just want to get some advice and personal accounts of whether or not clicker training has been useful. Thanks in advance for your help! I just started Dillon in pre-agility/obedience training last week and the class uses clickers. I have been practicing at home with it, but I haven't noticed him catching on any faster than just rewarding with treats alone. The timing of the clicker is the only advantage I can see, but saying "good boy" would give the same timing. Maybe someone else can chime in with a good explanation of why it is better to use the clicker than treats alone. 3. Some research suggests the clicker directly stimulates the amygdala, which is associated with "good feelings". This is the postulated reason that even dogs who are "zoned out" -- so keyed up, generally either with aggression or fear, that they have completely tuned out what's going on around them -- will eventually respond to a clicker. It doesn't require the thinking part of the brain. Thanks for all of your comments so far! Newcastle, I plan to eventually go through agility training with Boz. Your statement about the clicker being a good training tool for advanced training makes sense. I think I will stick with it! It seems like the verbal cue works well for many of you though, and the benefit is definitely not having to take the clicker everywhere! Dillon'sMom, it sounds like you are using the clicker for pre-agility/obedience training. I am going through his first puppy class at our local anti-cruelty society, however have found a training organization in my area that uses clicker training as their primary method. Does your dog training class use clickers, or do you just bring your clicker and use it during the class? I am wondering about this, as I do not believe the anti-cruelty society uses this method of training and I plan to bring my clicker to the class. Will bringing my clicker to a class that does not use clickers be disruptive.
