Now All Roads Lead to France
On the publication in March 1812 of his long narrative poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," Lord Byron, with heady self-celebration, wrote: "I woke up one morning and found myself famous."
Edward Thomas, Anglo-Welsh poet and essayist who was killed, aged 39, on the western front in the spring of 1917, did not make sense such instant recognition and ecstatic. For most of his adult life he worked as an auditor fretfully book and hack writer, jostling commissions to support his wife free thought Helen and their three children.Sometimes, and often hit by suicidal depression - he was diagnosed as "neurasthenia" in the opaque language of psychopathology at the time - he wanted to be freed from the drudgery of a life spent writing about writing. He felt caged by the domestic and at various times, choose to spend long periods outside of his wife and children he loved, but neglected and abused. "What I really need to do is to live alone," he confessed to a friend. "It's really the type H [Helen] and children that make life almost impossible."
At such times melancholic Thomas may feel unearned, self-pity of a man of letters who married and became a father too young, as a student at Oxford, and was forced to work. "For I hate my job," he writes, "my review: I feel my best is negligible: I have no vitality, no originality, no love. I do damage. Love and lust is dead almost dead. "
Despite its exaggerated sense of failure and self-blame, Thomas was an influential critic and fierce poetry, the literary form he revered above all others, and a friend of many other writers, including Rupert Brooke and Joseph Conrad. He was tall and attractive, loved and admired by many. His life was interesting and varied as it moved from the family cottage in rural Hampshire and literary London.
None of this was enough for him, however, because he aspired to write, not a critic, travel guides or biography, but his own "original writing," as he called it. What he wanted above all was to write poetry. It was not until he befriended the American poet Robert gel at a rally in London that he began timidly to believe it would be possible for him to write the poetry rather than to see him.
Frost was four years older than Thomas and moved to England, on a whim in 1912.
