“This year has been bad. I haven’t been able to keep the signs out,” she said. “Within one day they’re gone. I should have $12,000 in sales by this time. I don’t even have $8,000 yet.”

The cost of the signs is not high, and in previous years she occasionally would reclaim signs dropped off at Township Hall.

And Hall holds no grudges. In the past, she placed newspaper advertisements simply asking for the signs back or stating she was praying for the alleged thief.

But a lack of sales will hurt the three charities to which customers can choose to have 10 percent of sales donated: the Veterans Home of Grand Rapids , Hospice and the local fire department’s Learn Not to Burn program.

Hall said she believes she discovered a suspect in past thefts. She turned a license plate number over to police after observing a man taking signs, she said. Uninterested in pressing charges, she asked a police officer to pass on to the suspect the advertisement stating she was praying for him.

Later, she came across the man and told him about the charities that lose out when sales drop. She is convinced he is not taking this year’s signs, having called his home.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” she said. “Does someone have a vendetta against me?” she said.

Although township employees remove and dispose of any signs in rights of way, Hall’s signs are placed well off the road near other signs that remain for months. Township Manager Robert Homan said he is not aware of employees removing Hall’s signs, and Hall said township officials have supported her efforts over the years.
