Film Review: 30 Minutes or Less
Unlike its bungling pizza-delivery guy hero (Jesse Eisenberg, impressively leaping from “social” to anti-social), the R-rated 30 Minutes or Less does deliver its down-market goods, provided the buyer is an 18 to 40-year-old, easy-to-please male with a hearty appetite for mindless raunchiness peppered with nonstop assaults of the F-word in all its iterations.Yes, there are plenty of laugh-inducing moments, maybe even more than 30 minutes’ worth, and committed performances from all. And Ruben Fleischer (who also directed Eisenberg in Zombieland ) leaves no time for anyone (audiences included) to catch their breath. But let more demanding ticket buyers beware.
The plot is movie pitch-perfect (disgusting thugs force a nice loser into robbing a bank for them after arming him with a time bomb). Perfect too are the bland Grand Rapids, Michigan locations and strip malls where the film’s no-life, low-life denizens do battle and raise hell.
Likeable loser Nick (Eisenberg) somehow can’t get his pizzas delivered on time or get a commitment from girlfriend Kate (Dilshad Vadsaria), who is moving away. He even infuriates Chet (Aziz Ansari), his buddy since childhood and Kate’s brother, after confessing he stole Kate’s virginity.
Meanwhile, scumbags Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson) are plotting to kill off Dwayne’s tight-fisted, bullying dad The Major (Fred Ward as a former mega-macho Marine), since Dwayne needs the money to open a tanning parlor that will front his prostitute operation. When hit man Chango (Michael Peña) demands a $100,000 fee to kill the ex-Marine, Dwayne and Travis realize they need to rob a bank but will kidnap a patsy to do that job for them. They’ll send him off to work after dressing and wiring him in the latest bomb-wear.
30 Minutes or Less doesn’t bother to explain how the two idiots manage to build the intricate bomb suit, though they do it in what seems like 30 seconds or less. Rather, the film barrels ahead pedal to the medal into the capers as Dwayne and Travis capture Nick and dress him to steal. In a gesture of loyalty, Chet excuses Nick’s indiscretion with his sis and joins his desperate pal in stealing a car, then robbing the bank.
