According to Dr. Vicki Ferguson, professor and chair of the education and speech language pathology department, Brickman served as a valued member of the teacher education faculty. My wife is a veteran teacher at 60 years old who would like to retire. She has 17 years in private schools under the social security system. She also has 16 years in a state retirement system while teaching in public schools. In Kentucky, she is only allowed to retire from one system or the other, yet she earned both. This just doesn’t seem fair – has anyone found a way to beat this? She would only get about 30% of her social security if she retires from her state pension. If she goes to social security, she will have to wait until 65 – too old to be teaching in 4th grade.
If she paid into both, she can draw from both just not as much. Drawing Social Security doesn’t cost Kentucky anything. She will have to wait until she is 62 to draw social security and then would only get 70% of the benefit that she would get at full retirement age of 66.
