NBK honors outstanding high school grads

Under the auspices of the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Ahmed Al Abdelmohsin Mulaifi, National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) has honored outstanding high school graduates in a ceremony held recently at the Regency Palace, as part NBK program of corporate social responsibility.

The Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Ahmed Al Mulaifi Abdelmohsin NBK welcomed the initiative in supporting the youth of Kuwait and sponsoring outstanding secondary school graduates for the 2010/2011 academic year.

NBK Kuwait has honored Top 50 high school graduates for the academic year 2010-2011 in the arts and sciences, as well as the honor graduate in religious studies and top private schools.

Kuwait: Stateless 'Bidun' Denied Rights | Human Rights Watch

(Kuwait City) - Kuwait has not fulfilled its promises decades of dealing with claims of citizenship for more than 106 000 inhabitants Bidun stateless, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.

"The government has responded to the peaceful demonstrators with promises of reform, but we must go further and deal with their citizenship applications."

In February and March 2011 hundreds of Bidun gathered to protest against the government's failure to act on their citizenship applications. In response, the government promised new benefits, including birth, marriage and death certificates, free health care, and better access to employment. If implemented, these would be positive steps, says Human Rights Watch. But she had to leave because of their condition - their citizenship claims - unchanged.

Um Walid, a widow of 43 years Bidun, said she had no paperwork to establish his relationship with her deceased husband."[When] a Bidun dies, there is no death certificate, [then] there is no proof that I even had a husband," she said. "We do not [an] identity." Basim A. told Human Rights Watch: "[My son] was born without a birth certificate, [and died] without a death certificate."

Statelessness has existed in Kuwait since independence in 1961.After an initial registration period ended, the authorities shifted Bidun citizenship applications to a series of committees that have avoided to settle claims, while maintaining the sole authority to determine access to the documentation Bidun civil and social services. Kuwaiti law prohibits courts from adjudicating citizenship applications.
