Reality TV meets Hilton Head in episode on group vacations
Hilton Head Island will star in an upcoming reality TV episode in which travelers stay in a local vacation rental property.
The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce and local home and villa rental agencies are recruiting a family or group to appear in “Getting Away Together,” a show producers are filming for PBS.
The show is being produced for the Vacation Rental Managers Association, a national organization, by PineRidge Film & Television Co. of Jacksonville, Fla.
Organizers of the show, which will focus on people who share their vacations with others, say the practice is becoming increasingly common and can include girl or guy getaways, family reunions and milestone celebrations.
“This is one of those trends that no one has really portrayed on TV yet,” said Amanda Drake, a spokeswoman for the show. “It’s an exciting opportunity for the local tourism organization.”
The show, whose sponsors include travel advice website TripAdvisor, is expected to begin airing on PBS stations in October.
Producers plan to film 13 episodes, each of which will depict a different group’s trip to a destination such as North Carolina’s Outer Banks; Maryland’s Deep Creek Lake, Mount Hood, Ore.; St. Augustine, Fla.; Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; and Oceanside, Calif.
Filming has begun elsewhere and is scheduled to come to Hilton Head Sept. 24 through Oct. 1, chamber spokeswoman Charlie Clark said.
Hilton Head is a good fit for the show in part because it has about 6,000 home and villa units compared to about 3,000 hotel rooms, Clark said.
“Hilton Head Island is really a perfect location for that type of travel,” she said.
