Quilt show a summer staple at Saltsburg's Canal Days

The first unofficial days of summer may not give rise to thoughts of plummeting temperatures. But. it is a time of year when a particular cold-weather staple receives its due -- in the annual quilt show staged during Saltsburg's Canal Days festival.

This year's show is slated for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Saltsburg Middle/High School cafeteria.

The local Loyal Hannahs Quilt Guild sponsors the show and, each year, raffles off a featured quilt. This year's offering gets high marks from Jean Bash, who chairs the show.

"It's quite beautiful," said Bash, of New Alexandria. "In the 10 years I've been in the group, to me, this is my favorite one."

The generous queen-size quilt is called "Grandmother's Stars." It features a white-on-white background with a star pattern in a darker shade of pastels.

During the past few years, the guild has averaged 90 to 100 entries for its Canal Days show -- including quilts, bags, wall hangings and other quilted pieces. Many will be for sale, with the guild collecting a 10-percent commission.

The entries are sorted by categories -- large quilts (over 60 square inches), small quilts, and miscellaneous -- which includes purses, totes, table runners, place mats, garments and utensil covers.

"We never know what's coming in," said Joan Taylor, one of the guild's founding members.

This year's raffle quilt committee includes Shirley Brejda of Greensburg, Bridget Kitch of Export and Carol Nath of Saltsburg. The committee chooses the quilt's pattern and buys the materials needed; the entire guild membership works to put the quilt together, with everyone creating a square.

The applique work -- sewing cut-out patterns on to a background -- was done by hand.

"Everybody has a specialty," Bash said. "Some people are good at applique, others at piecing. It's whoever wants to take up the challenge. It's a community effort."

Tannette Rummel of New Florence has completed the machine quilting of the raffle prize for the past two years. Using her long-arm sewing machine, she punches in an intricate network of thread that holds together the quilt's layers.

In placing the thread, she "went with the patterns on the quilt," she said. "I think it turned out really nice."

Rummel also has been working on a quilt to be donated for use in a silent auction -- a newer feature that was added to the Canal Days show last year.
