Travis Allen, a former Temecula resident who moved to Las Vegas three and a half years ago to pursue a life in a kind of resurrection of the shiny gold jacket-wearing, raven haired god of rock and roll, has graciously mastered Elvis’ act to help feed the need.

Don’t be embarrassed to scream and cry if you attend his performance when he takes the stage this weekend at Pechanga Casino in the ongoing Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest.

Allen will be among a group of competitors in the Second Annual Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest presented by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc., Las Vegas’ famed Fremont Street Experience and the celebrated tribute artist production "Legends in Concert" this weekend, running Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Allen said he has committed the last few years to his job as an Elvis Tribute Artist, a term that was officially approved by Pricilla Presley, Presley’s ex-wife.

"I worked my butt off," Allen said in a recent telephone interview. "When I got laid off from my electrician job, I thought I’d try something else. I grew up singing country music. I was in a country band when I was 15 and 16 years old. We used to perform outside the old Edwards Cinema by Target (in Temecula)."

The country band Allen was a member of was called the "Young Riders."

Allen won first place in a preliminary round event of the contest in September. He is qualified to compete in the 2011 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Memphis, Tenn., during Elvis Week held Aug. 10 to 16.

The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Memphis is one of the highlights of Elvis Week, attracting more than 70,000 fans worldwide last year.

The winner of the contest will be offered the opportunity to sign a performance contract with "Legends in Concert," $20,000 cash, recognition by Elvis Presley Enterprises as the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist of 2011 and a selection of other valuable prizes.

Allen, 33, is a graduate from Elsinore High School in Lake Elsinore.

His father, G.K. Halverson, used to perform at Disneyland as an Elvis impersonator.

"Travis grew up loving Elvis music, but never sang like him until I put him in a $5 Elvis contest four years ago in Orange County," said Halverson. "He won first in the prelim and finished third in Los Angeles in the finals. It was called Creme de la King.
