Corrie legend drops in to see students
A MIDDLESBROUGH-BORN actress officially opened Teesside University’s annual Creative Arts Week.
Thelma Barlow, best known as Coronation Street’s Mavis Riley, returned to Teesside to open the event.
The actress, 81, played the role of Mavis for nearly 2,000 episodes over 26 years.
She also appeared in the film Mrs Henderson Presents and other TV shows including Dinnerladies, Fat Friends, Miss Marple, The Royal and Doctor Who.
In 2008 she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree by Teesside University.
Ms Barlow was born in Falmouth Street, Middlesbrough. Her father died just before her birth and she was brought up by her mother Margaret.
When she was three, her family moved to Hutton Rudby and then to Huddersfield.
Ms Barlow said: “It’s lovely to be back in Middlesbrough, I don’t visit the area very often and the changes in the town have been incredible.
“I was thrilled to be given the doctorate and am particularly happy to be back here at this very vibrant university.”
After opening the event, Ms Barlow toured the design and fine art shows to view the work of final-year students and she also spoke to performing arts student, giving tips on a career in acting.
During creative arts week final-year projects in design, fine art, film, dance and performing arts and creative writing were on display at the university.
Matthew Gray, from North Yorkshire, a BA (Hons) performance of live and recorded media student at the university, said: “Thelma was very inspirational and I was honoured to get advice from her.
