An ode to artisans

Designer TARUN TAHILIANI will present a couture collection highlighting Indian workmanship at Bridal Couture Exposition next month

He is one designer who has always taken pride in declaring that most of his collections use Indian craftsmanship and techniques extensively. Often, he has presented his country and brilliant works by the artisans on the international runway; and now the master couturier is ready with a fusion of European designs and Indian workmanship to establish new trends in bridal wear. Tarun Tahiliani will be presenting the third edition of Bridal Couture Exposition at DLF Emporio next month. The luxury exhibition will focus on the finest of details in bridal wear and also display accessories and jewellery. “This year the aim is to present Indian heritage in the most contemporary manner. The designs will be at the mannequins so that guests can notice the details and fine work that will represent Indian craftsmanship. The exposition aims at setting up new trends in luxury trousseau, so the best will be displayed here,” says Tahiliani and informs that after Delhi, the exhibition will travel to Mumbai. The first two editions of the exposition met with great success due to the distinctive nature of its concept, the grandeur of its spaces and diverse stories.

Talking more about the designs, the designer says that this time the highlight of the collection is on gowns that take inspiration from Italian silhouettes and structuring. “When it comes to structure and cuts, I feel nothing can beat the Italian designs. But the work that is done on the gowns is very much Indian — zardojis , chikankari , dabka and other Indian embroideries. Our artisans are the best in the world and they do brilliant work. People should know about them and in luxury section there is a lot of demand for such works. I try my best that through such initiatives, these craftsmen get their due share of recognition,” explains Tahiliani about his collection and adds that when it comes to bridal trousseau, Indians prefer to buy something from desi designer houses.

“In luxury section, people might buy shoes from the West, but when it comes to apparels, they opt for desi . There are lots of experiments being done in bridal wear, but this season, I think it will be a fusion of Western cuts and Indian patterns that will rule.
