CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Five people were injured in a multi-vehicle wreck which completely shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 85 in north Charlotte for more than an hour Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred in the northbound lanes of I-85 between the exits for Sugar Creek Road (Exit 41) and City Boulevard (Exit 43). The wreck happened around 7:35 a.m. 

Three tractor trailers and eight passenger cars were involved in the wreck.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the entire ordeal was caused by a tire which fell off a tractor trailer.

As a result of the loose tire on the interstate, a black Hyundai and black Pacifica car slammed on brakes. A tractor trailer hauling meat slammed into the back of these two cars.

Two tractor trailers then rear ended each other. They pushed the tractor trailer hauling meat into the concrete median wall which pinned in a Ford Explorer and a Chevy Malibu. 

The other four cars had minor rear-end damage as a result of trying to avoid hitting the tractor trailers.

The highway patrol said the only driver who could be charged was the one who lost the tire. Since that person hasn't been located, a trooper said no charges have been filed.

Four patients were transported to Carolinas Medical Center, and one patient was taken to Presbyterian Hospital. All of the patients were treated and released from the hospital.

All lanes of I-85 were reopened by 10 a.m.
