Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (16GB)

Not only did the Apple iPad start the tablet wars, but its latest iteration—the Apple iPad 2 —continues to dominate the tablet market. While other manufacturers have tried to cash in on the iPad’s popularity with their own tablet designs, no real iPad contender has yet to even come close to knocking the iPad off its pedestal. Pundits had high hopes that the Motorola Xoom Android tablet would be up to the challenge, but its long list of missing features delegated it to the not-ready-for-prime-time category.

Here in June 2011, the focus has now turned to the new 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet—a bigger version of Samsung’s original 7-inch Galaxy Tab . What makes the Galaxy Tab 10.1 different from those that have come before? Mostly its size and weight. Specifically, at a third of an inch thick, it’s just as skinny as the iPad 2. Coming in at a featherweight 1.24 pounds, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is actually a hair lighter than the 1.33-pound iPad 2. In fact, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the lightest tablet we’ve seen with a screen size larger than 8 inches. Factor in an excellent-looking display, stellar camera quality, and the latest tablet-optimized version of the Android OS (Honeycomb, version 3.1), and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 might just be the one to finally give the iPad a run for its money.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is even priced practically the same as the iPad 2. The 16GB version of the Wi-Fi–only version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 costs $499.99, while the 16GB version of the iPad 2 is 99 cents cheaper, at an even $499. The Wi-Fi–only 32GB Galaxy Tab 10.1 costs $599.99, and the iPad 2 equivalent sells for $599. If you want a version that includes a wireless broadband radio, Verizon will soon start offering a 16GB model of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that will sell for $529.99, with a 32GB version at $629.99. Not only are these prices cheaper than the AT&T and Verizon versions of the iPad 2 (in Apple's case, $629 for the 16GB model and $729 for the 32GB version), but the Galaxy Tab 10.1’s 4G/LTE broadband radios are faster than the iPad’s 3G radios for speedier Web surfing. (Note that the price listed for any model that has a wireless broadband radio is based on also agreeing to a two-year contract.)

Place the Galaxy Tab 10.1 next to the iPad 2, and you might mistake one for the other. They both have a black bezel that surrounds the screen and a silver edge all the way around their bodies. The most immediate difference between them is that the iPad features a physical home button on the bottom bezel (when you hold the tablet in portrait orientation), while the Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn’t have any physical buttons anywhere on its bezel. (Honeycomb instead uses onscreen buttons exclusively.
