22 tornadoes confirmed in Central PA since April
The National Weather Service office in State College confirmed two more tornadoes in York County, Pennsylvania following last weekend’s storms bringing the total tornado count in Central Pennsylvania to 22 for the year .
A majority of the tornadoes have been short-track and weak but at least three have covered several miles and have been rated EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Of those, an EF1 with a path of over 16 miles occurred on May 5 in Schuylkill County and an EF2 damaged buildings and trees at the Round Top Ski Area in York County on April 28. All of the 22 tornadoes occurred during eight different storm events which have affected Central Pennsylvania since April.
Climatologically speaking, Pennsylvania is no stranger to tornadoes and every county has seen its share over the years with York and Lancaster counties being the center of tornado formation for Pennsylvania according to the National Weather Service. Central Pennsylvania isn't the only Mid Atlantic region experiencing a significant increase in tornado activity this year. The National Weather Service office in Sterling, Virginia which covers areas South of the Pennsylvania state line including the District of Columbia has reported 25 tornadoes this year. A significant and unusual increase for that area as well.
