GIANNI Versace doted on his niece, Allegra. The flamboyant designer called her his “little princess”, read to her, shared his love of art and design with her and took her to galleries and catwalk rehearsals. According to Gianni’s brother Santo, Allegra was “the daughter Gianni never had” while Donatella, Allegra’s designer mother, freely admitted their special bond. “My children were his children,” she once explained. So when, at the age of just 11, Allegra learned that her beloved uncle had been killed outside his mansion in Miami in 1997, she was inconsolable. She had learnt of his murder on a television news report before her mother had had the chance to break the news.

According to a family friend, at Gianni’s funeral, “Allegra had her head [tipped] backwards and she was crying so much that the tears ran down into her mouth.” That she was devastated is not in doubt but it is only now that Allegra, 24, has revealed the full impact of her uncle’s death on her and described her descent into “darkness” in the years that followed. The rare interview given to Italian newspaper La Repubblica comes just as Allegra (who has previously fought a long battle with anorexia) has returned to the fashion fold and joined the board of directors at the House of Versace, a move which would have delighted her uncle.

During his lifetime Gianni – a favourite of Princess Diana and the man responsible for creating the safety-pin dress that arguably made actress Liz Hurley’s career – let it be known that he wanted his adored niece to run his fashion empire one day and duly left her half of his £300million business (which she inherited on her 18th birthday) in his will. Donatella got 20 per cent. For years, however, Allegra resisted joining the fashion house, which has a reputation for glamorous ostentatious designs, and her revealing interview goes some way to explaining why.

Gianni’s death was a blow she was not emotionally equipped to deal with and it led to a downward spiral in her life during which she attempted to flee her famous name and its associations. “I lived in darkness for years. I couldn’t remember anything of my life before that terrible day,” she explains. “I couldn’t even remember what he looked like. I lost every sensation that had bound us.” She says Gianni’s death wiped out all memories of him “as if he had never existed”.

Princess Diana’s niece, Lady Amelia Spencer appeared in a South African court on an assault charge. According to witnesses, Spencer kicked at a man on crutches during an altercation at a McDonald’s drive-thru.

The incident took place in the early morning hours of December 29 when Spencer accompanied with one of her sister and two unknown men.

The rage of Spencer brought the victim on crutches. According to the Daily Mail, he got soccer injury.

The case will run until March third.

The 18-year-old girl is a daughter of Earl Spencer who is a late brother of Princess Diana and a first cousin of Britain’s Princess Harry and William.
