Stay hot or else: Twins could become sellers if they're not in contention at ...

The Twins are one of the hottest teams in baseball, winners of four straight and 11 of 13.

After Thursday's 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox, they're 8-1 in their past nine Central Division games, and they have picked up 7-1/2 games in the standings since June 2.

Still, their window to get back into the division race might be smaller than it appears, and one wonders where the team needs to be at the July 31 trade deadline to keep general manager Bill Smith from selling off valuable assets.

"We need to be in contention," Smith said this week. "There's a lot of ground to be made up in a short period of time."

The Twins, of course, believe they can do it. And though they've never dug themselves out of the kind of hole they find themselves in through 67 games - they're still 11 games under .500 - they have been a good second-half club under manager Ron Gardenhire.

In 2006, the Twins were in first place on just one day, the last of the season. In 2009, they were 7-1/2 games behind Detroit in mid-September but forced a one-game playoff and won the division in extra innings. They're also starting to get healthy, with shortstop Tsuyoshi Nishioka playing his first game since April 7 on Thursday and Joe Mauer set to catch tonight for the first time since April 12.

Gardenhire said becoming a seller hasn't entered his mind. It can't. He has to approach the season game by game; otherwise, it gets too big.

"You catch up to .500 and you see where you're at," he said. "I don't think anybody has any plans of selling anything unless we go right back down the tubes, you know what I mean? We've got something working here.

"I think everybody wants to see, because we've been such a good second-half club, and that bodes well for us not being sellers. That's me, not the general manager, talking."

The Twins have some big one-year contracts on players who would be attractive to a contender, most notably that of Michael Cuddyer, who hit a mammoth homer into the bullpen behind the left-center field fence for the only run of Thursday's game.

Cuddyer, 32, has been at the center of the Twins' resurgence this month. In his past 10 games, he's batting .371 with three homers, nine RBIs, eight runs scored and five walks. The lifetime Twin is playing on a one-year club option that is paying him $10.5 million.

Delmon Young ($5.37 million) is on a one-year deal, as is Jason Kubel ($5.
