Cost of living - Africa's expensive cities
Three African cities are for the first time among the world’s 10 most expensive cities for corporate expatriates to live in — reflecting the growing importance of the continent for business .
Luanda, Angola emerges as the most expensive; Ndjamena, Chad is third and Libreville, Gabon seventh in Mercer’s annual cost of living survey. The survey grew out of requests from corporations to understand the cost of living their global assignees face as expats , helping them to design fair compensation packages.
It looks at 214 cities and measures the comparative cost of 200 items such as housing and transport. Often the costs may be higher for an expat than for a local, with more expensive food , housing in safer areas and modern services.
Companies have to offer employees at least the same standard of living in the foreign country as they would have at home. New York and the US dollar are used as the base measures.
