Sites in Belmont and Lynhurst recognized

Two more Central Elgin heritage assets are now secure.

Heritage Central Elgin, which oversees heritage issues in the municipality, took steps to safeguard the two sites Saturday.

Plaques were unveiled at two sites, the Belmont Cemetery and Toles Monument, a little-known parcel of property in Lynhurst dedicated to a hero of the War of 1812.

In Belmont, a brief ceremony was held to unveil a sign marking the site of the Belmont Pioneer Cemetery.

Located at the end of Union Street, it is now identified by a brown and gold sign erected by Heritage Central Elgin.

The sign tells the story of what was Belmont's first cemetery when the community was populated in the 1830s when Jacob Manning led settlers to the area.

In 1850, Thomas Nugent donated land where the cemetery is now and it was used until the 1930s, after which it fell into disuse,

Community leaders decided at the time to move those buried there to the Stewart Cemetery.

However, more graves were found in 1971 when the property, which was sold to private owners, was ready to be developed. The remains were reburied and the property fenced.

At the Toles Monument site, the sign unveiled pays tribute to one of the first pioneer families in the Lynhurst area.

Silas Toles was a Dutchman who came to Canada from New York with the United Empire Loyalists.

He fought in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Lundy's Lane, near Niagara Falls, where he was wounded.

Toles came to the Talbot Settlement in 1813 and was granted land by Col. Thomas Talbot in recognition of his service in the War of 1812.

The Toles built their first home on Wellington Road hill in 1814.

The Toles Monument, accessible through a trail on the east side of Wellington Road, still stands in a clearing at the top of the hill where the sign was unveiled.
