Preview: Bulls v Sharks
The clash between the Vodacom Bulls and the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday is set to be a straight fight for a play-off spot as both South African teams strive to secure a top six finish and remain in with a chance of tasting ultimate Vodacom Super Rugby glory.
The Waratahs are expected to win against the Brumbies and this will make it impossible for both the Bulls and Sharks to progress to the play-offs. The winner of the Pretoria clash could finish as high as fourth and thus ensure a home “quarter-final,” yet the most likely finish for the winner will in all probability be fifth.
Regardless of the various possible scenarios, both Frans Ludeke and John Plumtree will steel their respective sides for a must-win encounter. This is nothing new for the home team as they have approached the last five or six weeks in this manner and have achieved some impressive momentum and are now high on confidence going into the championship rounds.
The Sharks have been in the top six for the majority of the competition but have failed to really find their fifth gear of late. The constant struggle to put an 80-minute performance together finally caught up to them against the MTN Lions last weekend and Shark fans must think that their team might not be destined for greatness in 2011. The forwards do the dirty work up front, getting their team on the front foot with strong ball carries, dominating the set pieces and generally physically imposing themselves on their opponents. After that has been done, Morne Steyn and his scrumhalf dictate matters.
In their own 22, they get themselves out of trouble with good distance line kicks. Between the two 22-metre areas, they opt for the tactical corner kick or the high up-and-under. Only when they get turnover or retrieved ball after their high kicks or have set piece ball inside the opposition 22 do they get their outside backs involved.
The abovementioned game plan seems simple and easily telegraphed, yet very few opponents have been able to find a remedy for this basic Bulls bash-up game. The key could lie in the fact that the men from Pretoria have the perfect personnel on hand to implement their strategy.
