Smothering mom faces new charges in Waco

WACO - When video showing 18-year-old Waco mother Shantaniqua Nykole Scott trying to smother her baby in a Fort Worth hospital, an entire nation watched in shock.
Now, it's what investigators say happened before that trip to Fort Worth, while Scott was still in Waco, that she'll have to answer for next.
Scott was sentenced in May to 25 years in prison by a Tarrant County jury for injury to a child. Prosecutors claimed that the incident at Cook Children's Hospital wasn't the first time Scott had tried to kill her son, and had allegedly tried it three times before while in Waco.
McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna says even with the conviction in Tarrant County, she'll still have to answer for the alleged incidents of abuse while in Waco.
"She was sentenced for her conduct there," explains Reyna. "She will be dealt with for her conduct here."
The arrest affidavit paints a chillingly similar picture to the one captured on video.
According to the affidavit, Scott told a Waco Police Department investigator that she put her hand over her baby's mouth and nose. When he stopped breathing, Scott told police she "was patting him and was like oh my God, what have I done." Scott allegedly told police she didn't call an ambulance because her son started breathing and was playing.
With 25 years already ahead of her, Scott could now face an additional five to 99 years or life in prison if convicted in McLennan County as well.
"That does not mean we're going to go easy on her now," says Reyna. "It could be worse for her here."
Scott is now being held in the McLennan County jail, serving out her sentence while she awaits a custody hearing for her son. According to documents filed by Child Protective Services, the child's family members failed to respond to attempts by CPS workers to place him with relatives. A hearing next week will seek to place him in permanent foster care.
