DUKE NUKEM IS HERE ... AND NOT GREAT?

It may have seemed like forever, but “Duke Nukem Forever,” the shooter game first announced in 1997, has finally arrived.

The game debuted on Tuesday in the U.S., Canada and Mexico for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PCs.

Despite the long wait, the game launched to mixed reception from critics. A McClatchy-Tribune reviewer said it was “more good than bad,” although “time hasn’t been kind to Duke.” Wired.com called it a “technical mess.” At the website Metacritic.com, which aggregates reviews, the Xbox 360 version had a score of 49 out of 100 earlier this week.

After promising for years that the game would be released “when it’s done,” its developer 3D Realms closed up shop in 2009 citing lack of funding. The game was resurrected by Randy Pitchford, the founder of Gearbox Software.

The promise of uncompromising gaming on the go, a sexy new console from the makers of the Wii and a robust lineup of must-have, must-play games topped this year’s celebration of all things gaming in Los Angeles earlier this month.

This year’s E3 kicked off early with a look at what the makers of the Playstation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 have in store for us over the next year or so, and ended with a surprisingly robust laundry list of games everyone is going to want to play.

Sony’s biggest news of the show was the unveiling of the price and name of its next generation portable.

The Playstation Vita will cost a relatively low $250. That puts it in direct competition with Nintendo’s 3DS, which sells for the same price, at a time when the glasses-free 3-D device is struggling to match the success of the Wii or DS.

While Nintendo spent a segment of its press conference touting a long list of games coming to the 3DS, which launched this spring, the 3DS can’t help but come off as slightly over-priced compared to the hardware packed into the Vita.

This news follows close on the heels of another Wii U cost-cutting measure being made public, that being the console's lack of support for Blu-ray and DVD playback. Personally, I find the “cost issue” explanation at best unsatisfying. Nintendo is

Microsoft Price Cuts May Indicate Xbox 720 Will Come BEFORE E3

This means that Microsoft, like Nintendo with the Wii and the Wii U, may be looking to clear out stock. And the only reason they'd clear stocks is because they've got something else coming up; this also comes a few weeks after Microsoft announced that

Only Nintendo's Wii saw its hardware sales increase month-over-month, and that system had the benefit of a price drop. Even the accessory segment, which had seen year-to-date revenue up by 15 percent buoyed by Xbox Kinect sales, suffered a six percent

Nintendo went with a minimalist hardware design again this time. Indeed, its Wii U tablet controllers don't have memory or processors. That will keep Nintendo's costs low so that it can charge a lower price for its machine.

The Opinion Herd: Wii U's Launch and Price « Nintendo Okie

Nintendo announced a new system at E3 recently that will be replacing, or possibly standing alongside, the Wii. This new system will feature high definition graphics, much more processing power and a new controller with a 6” touchscreen. All of this is going to cost money. Nintendo is known for always making a profit on their systems from day one. The Wii, which sold for $250 at launch, was the most inexpensive console of the current generation. Soon they will be competing with equal pricing against Sony in the hand held market.  With all the new tech being introduced in Nintendo’s next generation console we asked the question, “When do you see the release of Wii U and how much do you think it’s going to cost?”

Tony Says: Traditionally Nintendo has released their home consoles in the latter half of the year. The NES released in October, Snes in August, and the Nintendo 64 in September while both the GameCube and the Wii launched in November. They’re definitely a company that likes to follow tradition so I would expect something similar to happen with the Wii U. Do I think they’ll wait until November to launch in 2012? Probably not. I think they’re going to want to get the system out as early as they can, but they’re going to want to wait until after E3 when they can spend a lot of time showcasing their launch titles. I think a September release is probably likely. It will give them time to really have a big marketing push after E3, but still give them plenty of time to build up an install base before the holiday rush in late October and November.

As for how much the system is going to cost I’m not really sure. We still don’t really know the final specs of the system and that will make a big determination of that final price. I think they’re going to try to keep it competitive, but make as much money as they can out of it. The 3DS launched at $250 partly because of the hype that was generated after it debuted at E3 last year. Many people are now saying that the system might have been overpriced at launch. Nintendo is going to do what they can to avoid that fate again. I can see a price tag of somewhere in the neighborhood of $299, or even as high as $349. Any higher than that and they’re going to price themselves out of the game.

Alex Says: Whoo boy! This new controller has so many new features and sleek design to boot, I’d say around 500 bones would cover the cost. When I saw the video the first time, I nearly made a bowl of popcorn and wanted to re-watch it a million times. This thing will be REVOLUTIONARY. Let’s keep the 1080i screen resolution, complex mapping and programming aside for one second, and let’s focus on inter-connectivity. To be able to switch from TV, to controller, and vice versa, is absolutely mind blowing. This technology and leap forward into the future will not come cheap; hence the $500. Of course as always, Nintendo will make the best price for consumers, and then gradually drop the price. The development and testing stages are still in full effect from what I have heard, so I believe fall of 2012 is a reasonable release date.
