Are you going to a high school reunion this year?  Nah, me neither.

I grew up in Hawaii, and have discovered that there is one great point of connection between being from Hawaii and being from St. Louis: in both places, everyone wants to know where you went to high school. For the record, I went to Punahou , a prep school founded by Congregational missionaries in 1841.

Anyway, last weekend my high school class held its 25th reunion, and I wasn't there. I made it to our 20th, but haven't been back "home" since then, and it just wasn't in the cards to return this year. Mostly I felt relieved when I realized early on that I wouldn't be able to make it; it felt like I was avoiding a lot of drama that I don't really have the time for right now.

High school reunions are like proms, or weddings, in terms of being major cultural and personal touchstones. For women, the cliché experience goes something like this: you diet for weeks in advance of the event, agonize over what to wear, and then spend the evening desperately checking everyone else out, trying to figure out who has gotten fat, who has had work done, and what ever happened to the beautiful mean girl who made you so miserable in gym class.

There's such a vicious pecking order in high school, and the great reunion stories often involve someone who manages to reverse their place in that order--the shy, bespectacled girl who has turned into a stunning and successful woman or the computer geek who made a bazillion dollars with his software startup in Silicon Valley.

As a Christian, I want to believe that none of that matters.  Not the pecking order that meant so much in high school, and not the revenge fantasies, either. I try to teach my children that being popular is less important than being good, that kindness and integrity will get you farther in life--or at least to a better place--than ambition and status-seeking. The Gospel doesn't promise us prosperity, but it does promise peace, a peace that passes all understanding.

So why does the thought of attending a reunion fill me with dread--not dread about other people and how they'll behave, but dread that I'll turn into a quivering mass of regressed insecurity? Sensing that dread in myself, I knew it was time to take stock spiritually and see where it was all coming from.

My high school was a great place, but not exactly low-key. There was pressure to be successful at all levels, and it's hard to let go of that feeling that "good enough" was never really good enough.  You might be pretty, but were you pretty enough to grace the pages of French Vogue? You might be athletic, but were you athletic enough make the Olympic water polo team?  You might be a good writer, but were you good enough to have your short stories regularly published by The New Yorker?
