Yorkshire beagle breeding expansion plans rejected
Plans to extend an East Yorkshire centre which breeds dogs for research have been rejected.
B&K Universal, based in the village of Grimston, breeds beagles for animal testing and had sought planning permission to redevelop its facilities.
Anti-vivisection campaigners had protested against the expansion.
East Riding Council said concerns over traffic were behind the refusal. B&K Universal declined to comment following the decision.
The National Anti-Vivisection Society welcomed the rejection.
Chief executive Jan Creamer said: "Science is quickly moving away from testing on dogs and their use is outdated, unscientific and cruel.
"It is completely unacceptable to use animals in experiments when there are superior scientific methods now available which do not involve their use.

According to the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health, cats are the most common animal to test positive for rabies among domestic animals. But rabies is more often found in wildlife, among raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes and bats.
"We started our own foundation to fund alternatives because that's where the real promise lies in ending animal studies. Technology can take us beyond that - and good riddance,'' said Sue Leary, president of the American Anti-Vivisection Society.
The National Anti-Vivisection Society reports that the results of animal research are often misleading as they lack predictability because humans and nonhuman animals are different in so many ways. The report goes on to say the areas where scientists

Scientists at the Tuberculosis Research Centre (TRC) here have hit upon a new molecule with anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties that could potentially lead to a better drug for the treatment of TB and common HIV sub-types.
The Truth About Animal Testing « Da Kiwi Universe
Most companies do test on animals, but they aren’t being shut down because their products are cheaper, people are familiar with them, and speaking up about it would end up in ridicule. Not to mention that people don’t seem to care enough. I have met people who claim they don’t care if their products are tested on animals, and I wonder if those people know how bad it actually is for the animals involved. I’ve seen what animal testing looks like, and I have to say it’s the only form of animal cruelty that’s considered legal. No, not necessarily. I tried cruelty free makeup and I like it better because I don’t like animal testing, and it doesn’t irritate my skin like those other brands. Medusa’s Makeup is a pretty good brand since it’s made with natural minerals, but the downside is that it’s almost as expensive as a few well-known brands of makeup. I remember being at a store where they had some eye shadow from L’Oreal selling for $11, while Medusa’s Makeup eye shadow sells for $8 plus tax.
