You say Porto Rico, I say Puerto Rico: We all say San Juan

Unless I wish--as one Web site suggests--to delve into a ninth-grade history book and study "Papal Line of Demarcation which divided the "new world" between Portugal and Spain," (yawn) I hereby declare that either pronunciation is correct. From what I glean, Porto Rico was the old Portuguese version, Puerto Rico emerged with Spanish incursion. Both cultural influences meet up in the apt English translation: Rich Port.

The smallest of the Greater Antilles, the islands and keys of Puerto Rico (population around 4 million) are a self-governing commonwealth of the United States. This 3,508-square-mile territory sits a mere 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, floating between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The sitting U.S. president is its chief of state, an elected governor oversees the island. Old Glory flies high, but the national anthem is the rather melancholic "La Borinqueňa."

Originally a military stronghold, this seven-square-block neighborhood with more than 400 restored buildings is considered to be the Caribbean's largest and finest enclave of Spanish Colonial architecture. Streets are paved with distinctive bluestone cobbles (they look more like bricks) that were brought over from Spain. Faḉades pop with the colors of ripe persimmons, juicy pomegranates, gemstone turquoise, tropical seas. Secreted behind many doorways are chic restaurants, hip bars, and locally owned businesses. Cleverly concealed behind others are common American chain stores and burger joints (y sí, un Starbucks). Spanish is the dominant language but English is widely spoken in the tourist areas.

The best way to get around is to simply wander the area on foot, but do wear sturdy shoes and take extra care where you walk: many of the cobbles and sidewalks have large gaping holes creating trip hazards all over the place. A free shuttle is also available, albeit on a very unreliable "schedule." Everyone you ask will say it comes every 10 or 20 minutes, but it's really more like an hour or so. You can wait (and wait and wait) at one of the designated stops or start walking and be prepared to scream and wave at the driver when a shuttle happens by.

Most visitors go gaga just following the miles of ancient ramparts and tucking into the fortresses, a combination of spectacular views and experiential history. Set 140 feet above San Juan Bay, El Morro National Historic Site features six levels of garitas (sentry boxes), dungeons, tunnels, outposts, and other fort-esque enchantments. Often referred to as the Gibraltar of the West Indies, Castillo de San Cristṓbal, also a National Historic Site, is another formidable defense post with moats and tunnels connecting its five independent units. Fuerte San Gerṓnimo watches over the opposite end of the city.
