Steven Grasso can't make the Bruins rolling rally in Boston tomorrow. But that didn't stop the 26-year-old North Andover native from celebrating the B's victory in style while on a tour of duty in Afghanistan for the National Guard.
He organized an impromptu parade featuring a homemade replica of the Stanley Cup, which appears to be made out of a trash can, aluminum foil and other miscellaneous items.
A video of the parade — posted on YouTube and barstoolsports.com — shows him marching with "the cup" held above his head. He is followed by two other servicemen carrying a homemade sign that reads "In Thomas We Trust" — a reference to Bruins goalie Tim Thomas.
Two military Humvees (dubbed the "duck tanks"), featuring flashing red and blue lights, take up the rear of the short, but spirited rally.
Grasso, a 2003 graduate of North Andover High School and graduate of Northeastern University, has been serving in Afghanistan since November. He is a sergeant in the 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiment assigned to Camp Phoenix Afghanistan, a NATO base near Kabul.
His mother, Barbara Grasso, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker in North Andover, said there are hundreds of Massachusetts soldiers in Afghanistan rooting for the Bruins.
"He got them all thinking about something else other than war," Barbara Grasso said. "They couldn't be there for the parade, so he brought the parade to them."
She said her son's instinct to have the parade didn't surprise her. Steven Grasso has been a Bruins fan for his whole life and is not just a "playoff fan," she said.
The battalion is scheduled to return in late-July or early-August and Barbara Grasso is hoping to get some Bruins players to greet them at the airport.
"They would love to see the real Stanley Cup instead of the garbage can," she said.

I don’t thinkcupcakes and cale are the same at all. Sure the contents are the same but it’s the presentation, the simplicity, the efficiency, the lack of messiness. It’s like a house.
