100 Years: Bridgehampton School Marks a Century of Students
By Kathryn G. Menu
There is a small greenhouse tucked behind the Bridgehampton School where students learn about the tradition of East End agriculture. In a little over a week, a group of nine seniors who helped build that greenhouse will be celebrated as the 100th graduating class to pass through the Bridgehampton Union Free School District.
The students’ path into the world is just beginning, but their roots come from a school surrounded by farm fields and an agricultural tradition that helped make Bridgehampton one of the most diverse communities on the East End of Long Island.
And while this centennial will celebrate the 100th state-accredited graduating class, the school’s history stretches back even further as the traditionally small school has been at the heart of the Bridgehampton community for much longer than 100 years.
Next Sunday, June 26, Bridgehampton will host its graduation at the school on Montauk Highway, which was built in 1930. Prior to its construction, several smaller school houses educated Bridgehampton’s students dating back to the first public school, “The Two Chimney School House,” which according to historic records compiled by local historian and author Ann Sandford, stood on the Bull Head’s Triangular Commons in 1720.
Bridgehampton Historical Society archivist Julie Greene explains that Bridgehampton actually boasted five different public school houses, as well as the private Bridgehampton Literary and Commercial Institute, which was formed in 1859 and ran for 50 years until its closing in 1907.
It was not until that same year that the official Bridgehampton Union School District was organized, and the existing school buildings were deemed inadequate by the Department of Education in Albany. So the district’s board of education voted to build a new school on three-acres on School Street, where the Bridgehampton Fire Department sits today.
The two-story building was opened on January 6, 1908, according to historic records, and first operated solely as a New York State Board of Regents approved middle school, quickly expanding to offer the first two years of high school course work.
In 1911, the Bridgehampton Union Free School District — by now a school district with a fully accredited high school — graduated its first student, Merton Tyndall, who would go on to become a teller at the Bridgehampton National Bank and rise through the ranks to eventually become the bank’s president.
