Sunday Homes: Pretty in Pink
— Landmark home is in quintessential New Orleans styleAmy and Carlos Villarreal's stunning pink and green two-story home sits among grand old oaks and overlooks some of Corpus Christi's prime real estate, the bay and Louisiana Parkway. The home, originally built in 1936 by Mayor Roy Miller, has been restored and offers many other improvements. The home's style is unique to Corpus Christi as it's reminiscent of homes found in New Orleans' garden district and is decorated in a Spanish and French style.
Why do you love your home?: We love not only the location of our home, but also the way it welcomes everyone who comes here. We feel like we have the best possible location in Corpus, in one of its premier neighborhoods with beautiful bay views, yet very little traffic and without the burdens or risks of living by the water.
Why did you purchase this home?: We owned a nearby lot, and often passed by this house when going to it. When this house went on the market for the first time in almost 50 years, we were excited because it was an even better location than our lot. Once we saw inside, we knew it would be a wonderful place to raise our children and entertain friends.
I get ideas/inspiration for my house by... travelling. The pink with bright green shutters, the walkway of rose-covered arbors, and the blue and white tile kitchen were all inspired by Claude Monet's home at Giverny. We also like "Veranda," "Southern Accents," and "Architectural Digest," and incorporated ideas we really liked from those. For example, the dining room walls which were hand-painted by Rebecca Glaze and Linda Baker, as well as the living room curtains produced by Drapery Showcase, were modeled on photographs from "Veranda" we had kept for years just in case we ever had a home where they would be appropriate.
Something no one knows about my home: We have hidden compartments throughout in order to retain the historic charm and elegance while enjoying modern technological advancements. False panels in the den ceiling connect the flat-screen television to the computer so that the television can act as a painting or any other need. Additionally, all those components are stored away in what appears to be a traditional cabinet. Behind it is a false wall/door opening to access behind the equipment for easy wiring. George Terrell wired the entire downstairs and outdoors for sound, so music can be played throughout the house at different levels. We also have a huge hidden Christmas closet.
