$20 copper theft threatens food charity's operationBy Sarah Fay Campbell

The theft of approximately $20 worth of copper threatened to spoil dozens of pallets of mayonnaise and condiments at the Newnan warehouse used by food ministry Bridging the Gap.
Most of the food items kept at the warehouse are non-perishable; the rest go in refrigerators, so no one had turned on the air conditioning yet this year, preferring to sweat it out and save on the electricity bill.
Over the weekend, Bridging the Gap Director Alison Wallace said she had someone over at the warehouse, which is provided to the organization free of charge, doing some electrical work. She asked him to figure out how to turn on the air conditioning. It wasn't working, and he discovered why -- someone had cut the copper lines that run from the back of the two units to the roof of the building.
On Monday, several pallets of mayonnaise and boxes of prepackaged condiments arrived from Magnolia Disaster Rescue, and the representative from Magnolia was concerned that the items might spoil, and contacted a television station with the story.
Tuesday morning, the property owners were informed, a police report was filed, the insurance company was contacted, and workers with Headley Heating and Air Conditioning Corp. got busy working on the units -- after they got the large vent fans in the ceiling running, which cooled things off considerably. The theft was covered by insurance, and workers said they hoped to be able to get one of the units operational by the end of the day. The second one was more severely damaged.
It could have been much worse. The thieves, who could have struck anytime between November and this weekend, didn't break into the units themselves, ripping out coils and condensers. But they did cut one pipe so closely that new fittings and additional work will be required. The Freon, a serious air pollutant, was released from both units when the pipes were cut. The damage was estimated at approximately $1,000.
Wallace said plans are to install a security system in the next few days.
Bridging the Gap currently feeds more than 800 families a week, Wallace said, mostly through providing food to various churches and other outreach programs.
"Any non-profit or outreach organizations... if they're running low on food, they just need to call me and we will load them up," Wallace said. "For every hungry person that calls, I've got someone willing to step up to help, to meet a need," she said.
